TURQUOISE

Turquoise Information:

Birthstone for December.

Long associated with Southwestern style and Native American jewelry, did you know that Turquoise is also mined in China?

Value

There is a lot of turquoise available, but how do you know you are getting the real thing?

You have to ask.  Beware of sellers labeling items as "Turquoise" simply because it is that color.  Ask is this genuine turquoise gemstone?  Has it been dyed or color enchanced? Synthetic, faux, reconstituted, turquoise dyed howlite or "yellow turquoise" are fakes.

Some of the most prized turquoise is a robin's egg blue color, from the Sleeping Beauty mine, found in Arizona.

You don't have to spend a fortune, get the look for less with alternatives, imitation, or Swarovski Crystals.

Care

Natural Turquoise is considered a "soft" stone, so it needs special care.

Turquoise stones used in jewelry are often "stabilized" (coated with a protective resin) to protect the stone.

Do not wear when applying cosmetics and perfumes.

Do not wear in water, or pool,  avoid extreme heat and sunlight.

For cleaning, wipe GENTLY with a soft damp cloth, or have a jeweler clean it professionally.
